Life is too short to hate your job
Your career should be a satisfying part of your life. Is it?
I can help you if:
You used to love your job…
but now you don’t. You’ve invested so much into this career trajectory and aren’t sure you’re qualified for anything else—do you even have a choice?
You just kept doing what you were “supposed” to do…
and one day you woke up and realized that you aren’t doing what makes you happy. Somehow you lost track of your own goals.
You never meant to do this job long term…
but you’re worried about making less money, trying something that has less security than you feel you’ve built up in your current position, or taking a risk for something unknown.
You resent that you have to work…
but you have to provide for your family. Which is ironic, because you’re so drained from the workday that you don’t even enjoy time with them. It’s pretty hard to believe that this is all there is.
You feel undervalued…
unappreciated, uninspired, and don’t believe that a career can improve your well-being.
You’re unexpectedly unemployed…
and don’t know what you want your next step to be.
Why me?
Early in my worklife I struggled to stay connected, engaged, and motivated. I couldn’t understand how others came in to the office and were able to do their work without counting every minute. Nobody else seemed to be terrified that this was it, that this would be their job…possibly forever.
I thought it was a failure in my own work ethic. My own “stick with it”-ness. I couldn’t understand why the money I was making wasn’t “convincing” enough to make me enjoy the 9+ hours a day that I spent in my cubicle. I was exhausted, foggy, and miserable.
Fast forward two decades: I have a fulfilling career, a healthy salary, am able to spend time outside of work doing things that I love and enjoy, and I have meaningful relationships. I don’t live in perpetual fear of losing my job, nor do I look enviously at my colleagues and wonder why they’re happy in their roles.
But I do see something else. Here and there I see colleagues who are frustrated, morose, and unfulfilled in their jobs. People who feel trapped on the hamster wheel because they have to provide for their families and want to retire before they’re in their 80s. I see people who subscribe to the same belief system that I had in my early years—and, truth be told, periodically when I knowingly or unknowingly approached the end of a given chapter of my career story. That’s the belief that “I have to work to live, I’m lucky to have a job, I just need to suck it up until I’m retired and can finally enjoy my life.” People who woke up one day (at 25, at 40, at 55) and wondered how they ended up HERE.
If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place.
